FAVORITE CHAIRS

We have several books on antique furniture and how furniture was constructed in the 18th century. We take our chairs very seriously here, looking for period pieces. While furnishing our home we decided to buy eighteenth century reproductions. We really love the look and quality of Southwood Reproductions. I pulled a few books to share photographs of how construction begins. Our chairs are comfortable, well made and have served us well for over thirty years. I see a little fading of the fabric, but only because we get so much sunlight in our home.

 Made in USA, Hickory, NC.

Wing Chairs
Designs differ with arms, legs and crests. The styles we chose are Chippendale and Queen Ann.

Upstairs Landing
This was my Mom's little French chair. She used it in her living room and later in the bedroom. This is my most treasured chair! I love how two fabrics are used, the floral on the front and seat and a stripe on the sides and back.

Back to the family room, Connor makes good use of Papa's leather recliner.
I'm not a fan of recliners but this was not my call!

My favorite chair in the house, my leather wing back.  I love curling up with my favorite books or a good movie and a cafe au lait. Notice my little pillow, it's a subtle reminder for Jim we are in need of a trip!

  1. Each and every chair is wonderful. The toile fabric is so gorgeous. The woodworkers guild where my hubby and I belong teach a course on period chairs-some of the craftsmen do work that is splendid. Your favorite leather chair looks like you could melt right in!!! Beautiful accent pieces everywhere too.

  3. Oh Emily, your home is breathtaking! I adore Queen Anne chairs. The woodwork on yours is lovely. Chairs are so wonderful, aren't they? They are a combination of beautiful soft sculpture and architectural elements. Thank you for a look into your gorgeous home. Hugs, Terri

  4. I love your taste in chairs, Emily. The toile is perfect and the yellow one towards the end is stunning! I must also point out that I'm swooning over all your ornate, golden frames in so many pictures. I'm drawn to this very style - it's beautiful! Lastly, I LOVE how you stacked the books on the round table. It all looks amazing!!

    XOXO,
    Meredith

P.S. Found you through Cedar Hill Ranch.

  6. Emily, you have a beautiful home. I love the Chinoiserie fabric on your living room chairs. I love wing back chairs too. You have some beauties. Something very special about chairs. Thanks for sharing yours. Wish I had done a post for this topic, but just couldn't get it together.

  8. Emily, you have some lovely chairs. :D I love your little French Bergere chair best. She's so cheerful!

I've noticed that we're chair challenged around here, but we don't have much room for occasional chairs at all....

  10. You just reminded me why I love 18th century furniture so much. I have not heard of this company before, but I do love to visit Hickory and the furniture mart there. Reminds me - I have not been in a while. Maybe, I am due for a road trip! Thanks for sharing your beautiful chairs.

  11. Emily, your home is gorgeous, and I loved getting to see parts of it. I was smitten with the toile fabric on the chairs in your livingroom, so I knew I was going to enjoy this post. I wasn't wrong. You have some wonderful chairs, and you obviously have such a good eye for fabrics. I loved all of the fabrics. laurie

  14. The chartreuse or yellowish chair is my favorite. I do not like recliner either until I have surgery then I go buy one. I know this is about chairs but I love the table stacked with books-love love it. xoxo, olive

  15. I think that leather wing back would be my favorite, too. Stylish and comfortable with that aviator leather...mmmmm!!! I gotta tell you, though, I am lovin' that Windsor! I would love to have those around our dining room table! I just love the way they look!!! Your Mom's chair is neat, too. I like the use of contrasting/complementary fabrics. You have a lot of really interesting (and apparently quite sturdy!) chairs in your home. I try to get my husband to understand the importance of buying fine quality furniture, but alas! It's probably for the best. He's so messy, he'd probably just end up spilling something on the fabric and I'd have to hurt him! :-) :-) :-) Your home is beautiful, just as imagined it would be!

I love your home, Emily. Every details.
You have such a classic elegant style.

I love the French yellow chair that was your mom's too! Looks very, very comfortable.
What a sweetie Connor is too.

    Thanks so much for sharing!

  18. I so love the fabrics you chose -- these are elegant, yet warm and inviting. I'm clearly ready to cuddle up in a book. How wonderful to have your mom's chair. That's extra special.

  19. Hi, I dropped by from Savvy Southern Style Wow-Us Wednesday. You wowed me -- I love those Queen Anne style chairs, got to get me two. I've been thinking for a couple of months of getting two smaller scale chairs and a round table to use in my family room, inspired by a picture of a library table I saw in Traditional Home. And here today I saw a similar arrangement, but with a somewhat smaller round table, in your study. Love the look! Now I'll have to hunt for the look for less within my miniscule budget. Thanks for sharing your beautiful home with us.

  23. Emily, it's amazing that I was going to email you SPECIFICALLY about furniture this morning and I clicked on my comments and noticed you had visited, so I decided to stop by your page first to find this post. :) We brought home a Young Republic solid rock maple hutch last night and I couldn't help but think of you (hutch). :) My original plan was to paint it, but when I read the markings and when I saw the AMAZING craftsmanship on that gorgeous piece of furniture, THERE IS NO WAY I will touch it. Its original owner took impeccable care of it. I am now on the lookout for a table more suitable for this hutch, and I am GIDDY that each time I look at it, I will be reminded of my dear friend, Emily at The French Hutch.
Your chairs are gorgeous and my favorite is your mother's French chair too. I cannot wait to be in our permanent house to be able to buy more substantial pieces.
Off to play with my hutch. ;)
    XOXO's

  24. I love the look of an old wing chair especially the 18th century reproductions that are as well made as yours.I buy them at auction and reupholster them but it is hard to sell them because as you say they are charming and comfortable! Your home is gorgeous and it must be quite large to accommodate all those seating areas! Great post!

  26. Wing back chairs are my favorite...cozy and comfy. Yours are so pretty and I really like your choice of fabrics/leather. I know what you mean about recliners.
We have a leather one that I wish would magically disappear. :)
Love your chair with the shell design on the legs. Have a great Sunday.

  27. All of your chairs are so charming! I've been trying to get my hubby to get rid of our recliners for years. He's very attached to his manly comfort. I've even tried having him look at wing back chairs that have built in foot rests...no luck. I'll say one thing for LazyBoy...they're built to last until the end of time.

  30. Beautiful chairs. There's a lot missing in today's chairs - the lack of craftsmanship. Hickory, NC is definitely well known for their furniture craftsmanship - Love your mother's French chair - beautiful post - I do appreciate you sharing with Home and Garden Thursay,

  33. What beautiful chairs, I think I like the first ones, but then the leather wing ack is pretty nice, I don't like recliners either and we have an ugly one that hubby loves. Have had a lot through the years that we have sold and upgrade to new ones. Like the Windsor too, my grandmother had one like it. Love your home. Looks gorgeous. Checking past posts. Beautiful picture of Connor on the wall. Not stalking he was in your Irish post...
